East to West
This year – for the first time in the history of Arc-
tic navigation – witnessed ice pilotage assistance tak-
ing place all the way through the Northern Sea Route,
from east to west, in February. The multipurpose nu-
clear icebreaker Arktika (Project 22220) was piloting
a train of ice-reinforced liners from Chukotka to the
ports in the White and Barents Seas. On February 9,
assisted by diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Dranit-
syn, Arktika unharboured M/V Inzhener Trubin and
M/V Polar King in the port of Pevek to be joined, two
days later, by nuclear-powered LASH carrier Sevmor-
put in the East Siberian Sea. All vessels had successfully
arrived at their destinations – Inzhener Trubin and Po-
lar King at Arkhangelsk and Sevmorput at Murmansk.
